UBUNTU

–Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa–

As my former president pointed out a couple of days ago with a quote from Mandela, “no one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion…” I find myself standing in front of the 9-ft. tall statue of the Madiba outside of the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Standing here, I am reminded that unity, compassion, reconciliation and spirit of ubuntu are in fact achievable within communities [and should be strived for against all odds]. We can all embody the African concept of ubuntu, or the belief that there’s a bond of sharing that connects all of humanity.
