peace, unpacked is a blog created and maintained by me, Kait Dugan, MA.
I hold my BS in Environmental Science from Nazareth College of Rochester (’13) and my MA in Peace and Justice from the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies (’18). I currently work in the area of violence prevention, specifically in regard to intimate partner violence (IPV). I am the Domestic Abuse Forensic Exam (DAFE) Coordinator of advocacy services with Center for Community Solutions in San Diego, CA.
I am originally from Rochester, NY and have lived and done work in many localities across various continents, including:
- Boston, MA;
- Cartagena & Bogotá, Colombia;
- Guaimaca, Honduras;
- Pietermaritzburg, South Africa;
- Bologna & Chieti, Italy;
- Berlin, Germany; and now,
- San Diego, CA
I have an interdisciplinary background and have worked in the areas of
- Sexual and gender based violence prevention and services for survivors;
- Community and police trust building research;
- Positive peace projects in post-conflict Colombia;
- Protection, attention and justice for migrants;
- Sustainable community development;
- Restorative practices, including restorative justice;
- Project design, monitoring and evaluation; and
- Community resilience to violence
I am fluent in both English and Spanish. Recently, I conducted field research for my thesis in the capital and in a former conflict zone in Colombia, entitled, “Rural and Urban Community Trust in the National Police in Post-Conflict Colombia.” I have worked in various roles in many non-profit organizations, including with Interpeace and the Colombian National Police’s Peacebuilding Unit, Project Concern International, The Trans-Border Institute, Urban Collaborative Project and the National Conflict Resolution Center.
